Firstly, besides providing a venue for the discussion of dominant approaches to IR such as realism, liberalism and constructivism, PHISO seeks to develop interest and scholarship in Global International Relations through the study of theories, scholars and sources of knowledge from the Global South, particularly the Philippines.

This may include relational theory, contrapuntal reading, decoloniality, civilizational encounters in a multiplex world, and the incorporation of IR texts that express the realities of one’s culture and experiences.

The Philippine International Studies Organization (PHISO) is the pioneering professional organization dedicated to the promotion of International Relations (IR) as a field of study in the Philippines, as well as interdisciplinary exchange of research and knowledge through workshops, conferences and collaborative publication projects aimed at furthering understanding about the concept of the ‘international’.

The mission and vision of PHISO encompasses goals for research and education.In taking up mapping as metaphor for approaching Mindanao, the Conference draws attention to its various histories, ethnolinguistic polities and cultural traditions.How are the region and its peoples seen in historiographies, political economies and identity politics?Keywords: Secondary education, education reform, human development, poverty, The Philippines JEL classification: O15, I21, I28, I31 Please note that discussion papers are works in various stages of progress and most have not been edited and proofread and may contain errors of fact or judgment.Revised versions of these papers may subsequently appear in more formal publication series.The David Wurfel Award provides financial support to an honours undergraduate or graduate student who has demonstrated the need to conduct research related to a thesis or course paper or project on the topic of Filipino history, culture or society.Preference will be given to undergraduate or masters student applicants.It seeks to gather academics, policymakers, cultural workers and artists to map the contours of Mindanao’s porous and overlapping ethnolinguistic homelands and its conceptual and physical sites of representation, identity formation, and conflict.Mindanao— volatile home to Muslim, settler, and autochtonous societies variously staking out claims for cultural capital, resources, territory, and opportunity— is complex and, as an object of study, extremely dense.The statement should include the following: (1) a research proposal, including a research plan with dates of travel, a budget outlining costs to be covered by the award, and a justification of budget items.(2) An essay addressing the selection criteria: (a) good writing ability; (b) knowledge of Philippine history, culture or society; (c) demonstrated commitment to engagement with Filipino languages and cultures; and (d) engagement with and a realistic concern for the solution of current social problems in the Philippines or among the Filipino diaspora.
