In this article we present an overview of a recently launched cohort-based Ed. program that prepares participants to conduct group dissertations.The program, a hybrid model of online learning activities and monthly face-to-face class sessions, is delivered through a partnership between a university’s college of education and the administrative office of a statewide system of community and technical colleges.

This community includes dissertations completed by Cal Poly Pomona students in the Educational Leadership Ed.

Investigating a “problem of practice” is a signature feature of the Ed D dissertation.

Yet, little is known about how doctoral students derive their problems, the nature of the problems they study, and the impact studying problems of practice has on students’ local contexts.
