My math-averse daughter wanted to cheat on her algebra homework.

So we downloaded Photo Math, a free app that lets you take a picture of your mathematical and algebraic equations, solving them for you and showing the steps to the solution.

And there is no guarantee you'll get the right answer to your homework question.

It is a real pain just typing your questions to email them to a tutor, and if there are a lot of mathematical formulas and/or diagrams, this is next to impossible!

There’s a great potential here, though, as the software matures enough to quickly and easily solve a wider variety of problems.

It’s up to us as parents and educators to make sure we continue to teach our children how to learn, rather than focusing on the “right answer,” which many kids can get using 20-year-old calculators.

Instead what you should do is scan your questions, saving them as a pdf or jpg file (and perhaps insert the jpg files into MS Word).

Still, it’s a promising technology that, once it matures, might actually turn into the type of wonder tool for education we’ve long been promised, turning our i OS devices into useful educational tools that will help kids actually learn math, rather than simply giving them a shortcut to homework answers.
